City Arts

City Arts at Christmas – an exhibition of past work by the arts org, plus a pop-up shop with papercut, ceramics, glass & textiles. This event is to launch their new venue, spread over four floors at the bottom of Hockley (near Desi Downtown). Running from Saturday 6th December until Christmas Eve.

The Music Exchange

The Music Exchange - Steve Larder IllustrationRegularly voted one of the best small record shops in the country, stocking a wide range of new vinyl as well as CDs, zines & t-shirts. A great spot to discover new local bands, they also programme live music around the city. More than just an independent record shop, TMX is a social enterprise dedicated to supporting Nottingham’s local community with profits going to Framework Housing Association.

Tucked away off Pelham Street on the edge of Hockley and accessed via a narrow passageway next to The Bodega Social Club, Cobden Chambers is a hidden gem. A recently renovated Victorian courtyard with terrace shops & a converted factory. Shops include Vintage Reclaimed, Ideas on Paper, Cavology, Anabaptise, Keishi Jewellery, Petite Petite & Cobden Place.

Special mention for Cavology because Bees Make Honey co-run the place! A space incubator for new designer-makers stocking gifts, accessories, homewares, fashion, art prints, music and books. Cavology was set-up but NTU’s business centre, The Hive, as a space for graduates and new businesses to test-trade.

Handmade Nottingham at The Malt Cross

Five Leaves Bookshop

The first independent bookshop in Nottingham since 2000. History & landscape, politics, fiction & poetry, lesbian & gay, counterculture, psychology, weird & wonderful, international writing, magazines & journals. Specialising in independent publishers. Five Leaves is tucked away up an alleyway next to The Works, just off the square.

Page 45 is just off the square near Debenhams & Oxfam Books. It’s an independent shop stocking a superb range of comics, graphic novels and related literature. They also do a bloody good job of supporting local independent comic book artists through reviews and exposure.

During it’s redesign, the upstairs of Broadmarsh shopping centre is playing host to a handful of independent shops, some pop-up, some more permanent including Prisma streetwear & Elefair.

A group of like minded creatives are putting on a pop up store in the old Jonathan James store in the upper mall of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre. The aim is to provide a creative environment for the regular customers and attract a new, diverse crowd from within the creative independent scene.

Craft in the City

Craft in the City are running their usual craft fair in the upstairs of  Waterstones on the weekends running up til Christmas. A great showcase of local talent in the craft community. The theme for this year is time: encouraging visitors to take their time, enjoy the ambiance  of the fair, talk to the designers and select their gifts for Christmas.
